[1st Place] Jomo Smith, MA Student, Center for Chinese Studies
Running Water, Scorching Earth
Beijing, China, Between Clock and Drum Towers, 2006
Shortly after dawn, when the air is still cool and merely the whiz of a bicycle can be heard, he is here. Like so much that is in China today, his characters represent the rich transformation that is happening daily in the heart of the Middle Kingdom. And just like things are built one day and gone the next, these svelte characters will only last but a moment, leaving no trace or remembrance. Who will remember them or the artist that drew them?
